A ';test case'; is one in which a party or group with a special interest hopes to get a ruling from a court that will determine a legal issue of interest to it or them. Special interest groups often search out individuals whose cases or claims would create such a test case, and finance the proceedings, hiring lawyers %26amp; paying court costs. Other groups with similar or adverse interests will seek leave to file briefs supporting one side or another. Such briefs are called ';amicus'; which is short for ';amicus curiae.
